Dear Maplewood Families,

I hope you all are staying healthy during this challenging period. I know you have many questions and concerns about school plans and I wanted to update you on what I know at this time. Over the weekend and this morning, I participated in a conference call with Dr. Cruz and other District administrators. I’ve summarized the information that was provided below. Please note, information will continue to change, and I will provide updates as I receive them.  As we move forward, the safety of our students, parents, and staff are our number one priority.

As previously announced, classes are canceled from Monday, March 23rd – Friday, April 3rd. These next two weeks will be used by the staff to plan how we will implement distance learning for the Maplewood community.  I know many of our teachers have already reached out to you through the Seesaw or Remind apps, or by email.  I am so grateful for their efforts to stay connected to you and their students.

While classes are currently cancelled until April 3rd, it is important to know that it’s unknown when we will return to school.  Dr. Cruz is in daily communication with the TEA Commissioner, superintendents from surrounding districts, and other public officials.

The school building is closed to students, staff, and parents. Custodial staff will continue to deep-clean and sanitize the building when our return is anticipated, and will not be available to allow anyone to enter the building. If you had a scheduled meeting at the school, we will be in contact with you to reschedule the meeting when we have received more clarification from AISD on the process for this. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we adapt to a different way of conducting school business.

The State of Texas Assessment of Academic Readiness (STAAR testing) has been canceled. The TEA Commissioner of Education has also submitted a waiver for Federal Accountability. Additional guidance from TEA on the Student Success Initiative (SSI)/grade placement committees will be provided.

Austin ISD Food Services will prepare and provide curbside meals for children under the age of 19 and their parents or caregivers at 70 locations while school is closed due to COVID-19 precautions. Please see the following website for more information https://www.austinisd.org/student-health/coronavirus/meals

You are encouraged to use the Telemedicine for your children (unless an emergency, then go to the emergency room). Please see the following website for more information https://www.austinisd.org/student-health/telehealth

Please visit https://www.austinisd.org/student-health/coronavirus for the latest AISD updates.

Here are additional resources for you on ways to talk with your child about the COVID 19 virus.

Again, I thank you for your understanding and support during these difficult and ever-changing times.  I will update you as I receive information from AISD and as we formalize our distant learning plans.

Sincerely,

Vickie Jacobson, Principal
