What does the Gifted and Talented program look like? How does the process work?

Nominations and screening run twice per year.

* 3rd –5th graders are nominated and screened during the fall semester.

* Kindergarten – 2nd grade students are nominated and screened during the spring semester.

There is a two-week window to submit nominations each semester (typically in September and January). Nomination dates are communicated through the Maplewood Newsletter, so if you aren’t already signed up, be sure to do so! Nomination Form: LINK

What kind of services does AISD offer for GT students?

The district offers services for students in grades 1st-12th in the core subject areas of language arts, social studies, math, and science. Gifted students are provided opportunities to work on advanced-level projects and activities with other gifted students in small groups and on independent study in the subject area(s) for which they have been identified for GT services. An emphasis is placed on greater depth, complexity, and pacing in the curriculum with skill development in communication, critical thinking, creativity, and research. GT teachers are provided with a variety of curricular support and resources specific for GT to support advanced-level differentiated instruction.

Will my child go to another school or class?

No, AISD uses the state model of “clustering.” Clustering means that students are grouped in classes together in their area of giftedness. All teachers at Maplewood have their 30 hours of GT foundation training. Each year, all teachers receive 6 hours of update training to expand strategies and rigor when working with GT students.

Does my nomination mean that my child will be in the GT program?

Nomination is the first step in the identification progress. Other tools help develop a portfolio of information which helps determine whether or not a child is selected for the program. Students take a standardized test with qualitative and quantitative measures. Work samples and observation check lists are developed for the portfolio.

Who decides if my child will be admitted in the GT program?

A campus decision making committee reviews the data collected for each child who was screened. The committee makes final decisions based on the analysis of collected information. If a child is not selected they can be screened again the subsequent year. A child can be screened once per year.

Will my child have to go through the identification process every year?

Once a child enters the GT program, he/she will remain in the program through all grade levels, unless exited according to AISD procedures. So, you will not need to re-nominate your previously identified student.

If you have any additional questions, please contact Maplewood’s Assistant Principal, Dr. Foss at stacy.foss@austinisd.org .

Where do I drop off and pick up my student?

If you are driving to school: Maplewood implemented a new traffic plan in March of 2017 for drop-off and pick-up; you can view it here.

Parking around Maplewood is limited – please remember that no parents are allowed to park in the faculty/staff lots.

  • Note that there is no parking along the Southbound side of Maplewood!

Please plan to walk or ride bikes to school; or park far enough away to avoid contributing to congestion.

  • Crossing guards will be stationed at 38-1/2 and Maplewood, as well as 38-1/2 and Clarkson
  • If you drive students to or from our campus, parking parallel to the school’s sidewalk along Maplewood Avenue is prohibited between the hours of 7:00-8:30 AM and 1:30-3:30 PM in an effort to promote pedestrian safety and improve the flow of traffic. Please plan your travel times accordingly. The Safe Routes to School Committee recommends that you drop students off at the parent drop off zone at the south side of our campus (near the library and art room) OR park in the neighborhood or along 38 1/2 Street and walk students into the building.  Please remember that the parking lot is reserved for AISD staff.Thank you for your support and assistance in improving traffic and pedestrian safety at Maplewood.

What options are available for after-school care?

We compiled a list for you on the After School Programs page.

Am I allowed to visit the campus or my student's classroom?

Parents and caregivers are allowed to visit campus and their students’ classrooms; however, we encourage you to make arrangements in advance with the teachers. This is in the interest of respecting their need to focus on their carefully-planned lessons each day, and to minimize disruption to the classroom and students.

There are various opportunities to volunteer in the classroom and on campus; please check with your classroom room parent or MySchoolAnywhere.com for updated opportunities.

NOTE: For the safety and security of our students and staff, all doors to the school will be locked at 8:00 AM.

All campus visitors are required to sign in at the front office – and must show valid identification – to remain on campus. Visitors will be asked to display a visitor tag (provided at front office) to identify them.

What do I do if my student is sick?

If your child is ill or will miss school for any reason, please call the school’s attendance clerk at 512-414-4402 to report his/her absence(s). Students should not return to school until they  have been fever-free and have not vomited for at least 24 hours without the aid of fever reducers or anti-nausea medicines.

What is Maplewood's policy regarding homework?

In 2016, after researching the impact of homework on student achievement and surveying our families about homework, the Maplewood staff has determined that the best and most appropriate homework for our students is DAILY independent reading of self-selected, “just right” books.

Please assist us in supporting and encouraging your child to read at least 20-30 minutes each night.

Parents desiring additional homework for practice of skills should speak with the teacher about providing grade- and ability-level assignments needed for extra practice.

What is the "parent cloud?"

Austin ISD provides a convenient single sign-on portal where parents can access their student’s grades, report cards, attendance records, and student information. Additionally, parents can add funds to their students’ school meal plan accounts and view menus for each month vial School Cafe.

For information on how to sign up, please visit the AISD website.
