Dear Maplewood Community,

We have spent the last couple of days processing the AISD news regarding proposed school changes we all received late Thursday night.  Thank you so much for the dialogue on facebook and during principal coffee Friday morning.  You all have shown how much you care about our Maplewood community while also thinking about ALL kids, including the Campbell community.  We are truly proud.

This news is hard.  And to tell you the truth we are still digesting and processing the news ourselves.  Please know that we are working on connecting with the Campbell leaders to start a dialogue. In addition, we are organizing to get district representatives at our school for a community conversation.

As we move forward, we encourage the following:

  • Know that it is okay to feel emotions
  • Be empathetic and vulnerable
  • Speak your truth
  • Understand we may not all have the same opinion
  • Practice active listening
  • Come to the table without judgement
  • Show compassion (we are peacemakers after all)

Stay engaged and educate yourself about district politics.  This decision did not come out of nowhere. Here are a few links to help you get started.  Please continue to share your knowledge with friends:

Send the district your comments and show up!

Don’t forget about the now and be present for all kids and staff:

  • Tutor students through Read Naturally Program
  • Shower our Maplewood staff with love
  • Volunteer in the cafeteria
  • Engage everyday in your kids’ education
  • Get to know someone new at the school and continue to build your community

As things move forward, we will continually center ourselves by reflecting on our mission: to make every child’s potential a reality by engaging and empowering families and communities to advocate for all children.

For us, whatever is decided, we believe this mission starts at home, in our school and extends beyond the boundaries of Maplewood to all kids in Austin.

Keep on being the amazing community that you are.

Peace,

Maplewood PTA Board
